Many will say that ADHD patients have been getting over-medicated in recent years. Whether or not this is true, masking symptoms with medication does not tackle ADHD at the core. This article takes a look at integrative medicine and its application for ADHD.

What Is Integrative Medicine?

Integrative medicine aims to treat patients holistically, taking all approaches and looking at various angles in regards to symptoms and general health.

It uses therapies that complement other treatments that are being carried out by the patient, thus looking at the entire picture instead of just one piece of the puzzle. This makes integrative medicine extremely effective in alleviating many symptoms that a patient experiences while also getting to the root of the issue.

Integrative Medicine for ADHD

Currently, integrative medicine is not the approach used for ADHD patients; rather, they are typically prescribed a single medication that aims to lessen certain symptoms, such as the inability to focus or remain still.

However, in patients with less severe symptoms, an approach that doesn’t include medication can be the best option for them. Instead of using a medication, we can aim to change certain lifestyle habits that lead to different symptoms.

One example of an integrative approach for ADHD is using a combination of psychotherapy, certain supplements, and exercise for reducing and managing stress. Individuals with ADHD can also work on reducing extra energy by moving their bodies sufficiently and getting the proper amount of sleep.

Some ways to alleviate ADHD symptoms include mindfulness training, taking certain supplements (such as omega-3 fatty acids, various vitamins, melatonin, and micronutrients), meditation, practicing breathwork, partaking in acupuncture, and generally eating healthier and more nutritious meals.

Before utilizing integrative medicine for ADHD, make sure that you find a good health care practitioner who is willing to work with you in its use for treatment. They should be able to answer any and all questions you have regarding what the best plan is for you.
