Some people who have received their medical credentials in the United States consider working overseas. There are actually six different ways to do this.
- International Locum Tenens
The most common way to work overseas is for a doctor to go on an assignment for a specific period of time. This is usually done under a contract, and the contract normally covers travel expenses, housing, malpractice insurance, and more.

- Telemedicine
Another way to go overseas and continue working is through telemedicine. You can provide services for your patients or consult with other professionals through video. You can practice medicine remotely while you are traveling or staying in another country. The fields that pair well with telemedicine include radiology, cardiology, pathology, dermatology, and psychiatry.
- Consulting
You can also work overseas as a consultant for an international company. In fact, depending on the job, you may not need a medical license. This type of job offers a high income, and you will use your medical expertise to provide input in industries that need it, such as tech startups, pharmaceutical companies, or more.
- Military Base
As a civilian, you can serve your country by working on a military base outside of the country. You will be a civilian employee of the military, but you will get great benefits, including health and life insurance. There are military bases throughout the world, so you can visit new places.
- International NGO
An International NGO is a non-governmental organization, such as Doctors Without Borders, CARE International, or Oxfam. There are more than 40,000 of them, and they rely on paid employees and volunteers all over the world. Many of them have medical missions, so you can work for one and travel to different parts of the world.
- Jobs in Medical Journals
You can also look through medical journals and find other opportunities that you want to pursue. They mostly won’t have support from an agency, but there are options out there.
